Good morning runners! Happy start of the weekend! Here's the daily training thread!

Today's Day 2 of the managed hunt I'm working at. One more 12 hour day and then I can sleeeeeeep. There will also be some sorta run of about an hour today.

So what is everyone else up to today, training and otherwise?

It's Friday, what're your weekends plans? Mine are pretty tame. LOTS of sleep and some longish runs.

Discuss... and HAPPY RUNNING!

Picnic snacky foods!

What are some good pic'a'nic foods?

All the things I can think of that aren't cake (I always take cupcakes) or dip & chips are goopy and not very picnic-suitable.

P.S. It is summer here.

Running in the snow
by big damn hero ([info]openended)

How much snow (in terms of depth that my feet are running through) is too much? I love running outside when it's cold and snowy, but I'm a bit concerned with slipping.

I live in an area that doesn't get a whole lot of snow (six inches is usually the most we'll see in one go) so I can't really justify buying myself some yak trax. Obviously I'm aware that if I can't walk easily in it, I certainly won't be able to run easily, but 3-5 inches is perfectly reasonable to walk in. So I'm wondering if, without some sort of traction on the bottom of my shoes, is there a point between "Hm, I wonder if I could run in that" and "Uhm, no way" where I'm more likely to fall on my ass than have a successful run? Anyone know an approximate snow accumulation level where running becomes dangerous?

Today I sent in my registration forms for the Boston Marathon!

I'm doing it through the President's Marathon Challenge at Tufts University, and it will be my first marathon.

I am very aware of how lucky I am to be able to do Boston as my first.

Now I have to keep training and get more aggressive about my fundraising commitment!

This run hurt more than I expected it to.. I kept stopping, I couldnt find my pace. My time felt super slow, Grrr. I have a 4 mile run tomorrow with intervals of easy pace and intense. I want to pick up my speed but I find that I need to stop more when I start running faster. I at least stop between miles... I want to be able to run at least the 2 miles without stopping. suggestions?

So we had a snow day today which meant no school!!! Is it sad that I really missed getting to run today? I guess I'll miss it tomorrow too since we just got the call that we have another snow day!!!!

So I know I said I haven't been running as much as coach said, but I have been running more this week!!! I ran for a full hour yesterday, and I am very proud of myself, i must say!! I'm anxious for some speed workouts though!!! =)

2 questions/opinions about school practices
by lauren ([info]tell_her_lies)

#1.  What are your views on animal dissection in the classroom?

I realize that scientists are trying to improve awareness, discovery, and education that they believe can't be received in pictures/videos but at the same time moral beliefs conflict with this and it is not necessary for someone who isn't getting a degree in this subject. do you think that scientific improvement should outweigh the killing of animals for high school classrooms?

#2. How do you feel about the food guide pyramid being taught in the classroom, showing mostly meat/animal derivatives as main sources of nutrients?

I had to sit through this in a classroom for the past week. everytime i went to fill out questions based off what was taught in the book, i made sure not to say that the nutrient was found in animals and gave various examples of plants or vegetables. i just feel as though they are not teaching different diets as thoroughly as they could which i find frustrating. For instance, the dairy group...they dont mention calcium in anything except for milk. there are plenty of OTHER sources of calcium besides dairy products.

I sometimes feel as though we are not allowed to have opinions on certain things because then we would be "causing trouble" or making things harder for people who do not share these beliefs. i almost feel like it should be treated like a religion in school systems, but am sometimes also unsure as to what exactly i want the school systems to actually do. i find certain practices such as dissection unnecessary but there also needs to be some sort of nutrition class due to the epidemic of obesity and improper eating in children.

Hey guys, Well I'm not new to the community (as I have posted at least once) but I'm not a regular so I'll have to give somewhat of a backstory.

In short this has to do with coming back from a nasty sprain, rrockwork to dreadmill to roadwork again and arch pain.

Cut for length )

Has anyone had any experience of success with arch support strapping? Do you have any recommendations for this?

Also does anyone have any recommendations for running shoes that support high arches? My shoes now are the Adidas supanovas.

My dad and I are going to Applebee's tonight. Nothing on the menu is specifically vegan, of course, and unfortunately Applebee's is too lame to put an official nutrition thing up. So, I just wanted to run my plan by you guys!

I figure if I get the Paradise Chicken Salad minus the chicken it will be alright. The description has no mention of cheese or croutons, just greens, various fruit, pico de gallo and balsamic vinaigrette. Is there any chance the pico de gallo and vinaigrette will have animal products?
Also, my dad is a big fan of appetizers. Do you guys think chips and salsa will be okay?

I have been to this Applebee's many times as a vegetarian, so I know they will be able to accomodate leaving off the chicken, and I'm pretty sure they prepare the food when it's ordered (given how long we've had to wait for our orders before). They usually deduct the cost of meat from my stuff, too :)

Thanks!

Vegetarian Restaurants are rather certainly going to be Kosher by Default. You don't need a separate Fleischig Kitchen... and all that.

Actually, I highly reccomend a visit to a Hindu Vegetarian restaurant in lieu of pharmaceuticals for small ailes.

Aqua jogging?

current mood: cheerful

December was a horrible running month for me. ITB issues, a hamstring issue, swine flu, and then moving from Ireland to Australia (with a ton of packing sucking up my running time) and a week in Oman enroute, where a female running alone in shorts would not have been a good idea, meant my mileage for the month was a paltry 10 miles.

However, now I'm cranking up again, and I have a lot of lost fitness to regain. This is harder because I've gone from a cool climate to a hot and humid one. However, I am very lucky and now have a pool, which is deep enough that I can't touch the bottom.

I'm aware of the benefits of aqua-jogging for maintaining fitness during injury, but does anyone aqua-jog instead of running when they are healthy? Are there any benefits/disadvantages? Given how the heat and humidity are currently sucking it out of me, running in the pool is sounding rather appealing. Would I get a similar benefit if I aqua-jogged for 30 minutes instead of running for 30 minutes, or is it a lesser quality running workout?

All input welcome. :)

Relation to vegetarians and vegans
by PicketyPucketyPum ([info]carcass_bride)
at January 7th, 2010 (02:16 pm)

Good day!
I'm from Kazakhstan, but I'm Russian. Two years ago I became first vegetarian and then vegan.
I also engaged in Charity - working with the Fund for Animal Welfare and also helping sick children.

And when someone finds out about it, as a result always a strange reaction: someone laughs, someone starts to teach me, tells that this is foolish and also I will soon get sick and die =)

However, I almost never "read" lectures on the topic of vegetarianism and Charity, and teach nobody how to live.

Kz is a very meat-eating country. And my vegetarians and vegans friends suffer from this relation too. I already got used, but it is still annoying.

I want to ask: is in other countries the same thing or this happens only with us?
(Incidentally, a similar situation is in Russia)

ps Sorry if there are mistakes in the text :)

Good morning runners! Here's the daily training thread!

Why are the dailies coming at you at the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad time of 3 am (well, only a bad time if you're WAKING UP at it, if my night was just ending it would be an entirely different -- and happier -- story!)? No, I'm not trying to live like [info]jakshadows all of a sudden; yours truly is heading off to work at a managed hunt, one of the many we will be assisting at throughout our parks in January. We have to be there at 4:30 and it takes about an hour to get there. UGH! My training for today will consist of getting home after working for about 12 hours, PTFOing for a few hours, waking up, eating and running for an hour before going back to sleep and repeating the whole awful process Friday. Caffeine WILL be involved.

So what is everyone else up to today, training and otherwise?

Question! What's the earliest you've had to get up to do... something, anything. Tell me all the details! Let me know I'm not alone in this misery :)
